Heat Assistance (LIHEAP)
What is LIHEAP?
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), is designed to offer heating and energy assistance here in Iowa. Assistance is offered to both low-income renters and low-income homeowners who qualify. Low-income utility aid can create new opportunities for more affordable rental housing. For households with children, it can also aid in back-to-school help for low-income families. LIHEAP aims to:
- Aid in the payment of a portion of their residential heating costs for the winter heating months
- Encourage regular utility payments through utility assistance
- Promote energy awareness and encourage the reduction of energy usage through energy efficiency, client education, and weatherization
Applications for heating assistance are accepted on a first-come/first-serve basis at your local Family Development Center. Aid applications are accepted from November 1st through April 30th (October 1st for households with elderly/disabled family members).
For more information contact your local Family Development Center.
