BackPack Food Program
New Opportunities is proud to partner with the Food Bank of Iowa and local Iowa schools to offer the BackPack Program™. The BackPack food assistance program for low-income families is available in Audubon and Sac County.
Kids need proper nutrition every day in order to grow, develop, and learn properly. Going even a day or two without food can have a huge impact on a child. The BackPack ProgramTM provides a weekend sack of kid-friendly, nutritionally balanced food to children every Friday during the school year. This helps ensure that on the weekend when students don’t get a healthy school lunch, they are still able to get the nutrition they need.
How does it work? The Food Bank of Iowa provides boxes of BackPack sacks to community partners and schools every week. Teachers and other school staff distribute the food bags to kids in need every Friday. The BackPack program food list includes a variety of free groceries that are nutritious and appealing to kids.
Benefits of the BackPack ProgramTM include BackPack sack recipients being better equipped to learn, promoting healthy child development, and reducing behavioral incidents. Proper childhood nutrition helps kids succeed in school and in everyday life outside of the classroom.
The BackPack Food Program is just one of the many nonprofit programs that New Opportunities helps provide to Iowa families. We provide educational nonprofit services for adults (such as the Family Development and Self-Sufficiency program and Financial Literacy program) as well as for children (such as the Head Start program and Early Start program).
