The Audubon County Family Development Center is the information, application and referral center for all of the income-eligible programs offered by New Opportunities, Inc. to serve the residents of Audubon County.
Backpack Program - A sack consisting of 12 food items are sent home with the eligible child each week on Friday (or the last school day of the week).
Children K - 6th grade on free and reduced lunches are eligible for the Backpack Program. To sign up, contact the school secretary.
Backpack Program is offered at Audubon Elementary and Exira Elementary School, in partnership with the Food Bank of Iowa.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

LIHEAP is a federally-funded program that has been established to help qualifying low-income Iowa homeowners and renters pay for a portion of their primary heating costs for the winter heating season. By doing so, you can reduce the risk of health and safety problems (such as illness, fire or eviction). The assistance is based on household income, household size, type of fuel, and type of housing. LIHEAP currently has an income guideline of 175% POV or lower.

Your application for energy assistance is also an application for weatherization of your home. Weatherization currently has an income guideline of 200% POV or lower. Visit the Weatherization page to view more information.
Food boxes are available once a month to Audubon County families in need. Depending on availability, a food box would consist of meats, canned goods, baking products and toiletry items. There is no charge for the food pantry, but you will be asked basic household information and proof of residency in Audubon county when applying. The New Opportunities Food Pantry is a proud partner of the Food Bank of Iowa. The Food Bank of Iowa supplements food pantry needs.
New Opportunities is happy to partner with the Food Bank of Iowa in offering a Mobile Food Pantry every other month at the National Guard Armory, 601 Southside Avenue in Audubon. Click here for more information.
Are you or someone in your family in need of clothing? Stop in to see the range of donated items available, examples include: clothing, coats, and shoes. The cost for the items is very minimal. The money received from these purchases is used to help out other crisis situations that do occur. All items are donated to center for re-sale. New donated items are received daily. To make a donation of clothing items, please contact Ashley to make an appointment.
