Greene County Gives Form  

The Greene County Family Development Center serves income eligible residents in Greene County. The Family Development Center is the information, application and referral center for all of the income eligible programs offered by New Opportunities, Inc. to serve families, individuals and elderly people of Greene County.

Energy Assistance (available by appointment) - Click here for Application!
 

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally-funded program that has been established to help qualifying low-income Iowa homeowners and renters pay for a portion of their primary heating costs for the winter heating season. By doing so, you can reduce the risk of health and safety problems (such as illness, fire or eviction). The assistance is based on household income, household size, type of fuel, and type of housing. Your application for energy assistance is also an application for weatherization of your home. Weatherization currently has an income guideline of 200% POV or lower. Visit the weatherization page to view more information.

*Mailable energy assistance applications can be utilized by an individual household for no more than two successive years. A face-to-face meeting for the purpose of taking the application is required every third year.

Food Pantry

In an emergency situation where there is a shortage of food for your family or for yourself, you would go to the Family Development Center. The coordinator will then supply you with a food package according to the number in the household to get you through for a short time. The food pantry can only be accessed every 90 days, per household per emergency situation. There is no charge for the food pantry, but you will need to have proof of address and income.
The New Opportunities Food Pantry partners with the Food Bank of Iowa to supplement food pantry needs.

 

Clothing

If you are in need of clothing for you or someone in your family, visit the Family Development Center to see what is available. If you are relocating and are in need of furniture, the center may have items to furnish your apartment or home. A sample of possible items to be found in the centers are: coats, shoes, trinkets, cooking utensils, beds, linens, toys etc. The cost for the items is very minimal. The money received from these purchases is used to help out other crisis situations that occur. All items are donated to the center for re-sale. New donated items are received daily.

 

SHARE Program

For two hours of community service, individuals can purchase food at discounted prices. This applies to anyone, no matter an individual’s income level.

Elderly Waiver Chore Program

Seniors need to apply for the Elderly Waiver at their local County Department of Human Services (DHS) office. Approved applicants are assigned to a Case Manager, who notifies New Opportunities, Inc., that they are qualified for Elderly Waiver Chore services. Clients are assigned a monthly budget for each service they will receive through the Waiver.

When a client is approved for the Elderly Waiver Chore Program, New Opportunities, Inc., receives a Notice of Decision document that tells us how many hours of service are allowed for that client. The Elderly Waiver Chore Program covers lawn mowing and snow removal, up to the budgeted limit of hours. New Opportunities, Inc., pays the chore provider and bills the Federal Government for the service.
